Introducing: Kevin Sheridan
Profession: CEO, K.S Software Solutions
Location: Sydney, Australia
Kevin Sheridan is the CEO of K.S Software Solutions. Kevin and his team design custom software that maintains secure encrypted transactions between government and financial institutions.
After a career in investment banking that spanned almost two decades, he’s spent the last eight years developing the business and managing multiple client projects – designing system interfaces and system functionality software. Much of his work is with the government sector.
Shoeboxed: Thanks for chatting with us, Kevin! Could you share with us how you got started?
Kevin Sheridan: Sure. I decided to target the government sector at the time of GFC because it was a considerably less volatile sector than financial institutions – many of which were undergoing significant downsizing due to market corrections/contractions.
SBX: Where’s your business going in the next few years?
KS: In a word – cloud. I’ve been specialising in my field for about eight years and much of what we do is cloud (or internet) related. As the cloud uptake by businesses really starts to grow, our business will grow with it.
SBX: How did you originally come across Shoeboxed?
KS: My wife was actually looking for shoes online on my iPad when she came across the mobile Shoeboxed app.
She knew that I was under a lot of pressure to get my receipts sorted out because I had four years of tax receipts in an actual shoe box. I had thousands of receipts that had not been looked after or filed properly and I needed to resolve the problem fast and get our returns in to the ATO.
Who would have thought shoes would have led to that but there you go!
SBX: What’s the biggest problem Shoeboxed helped you solve?
KS: Because the receipts weren’t looked after correctly previously, I had to step in and do it myself.
Four years worth of receipts, thousands of receipts… and I had to start from scratch. I wasn’t looking forward to it at all. There was just shoebox after shoebox after shoebox, all filled to overflowing with receipts.
I was at the stage where I was looking at having to do all the data entry and redo all four years worth of taxes. It was going to take forever.
So when I heard about Shoeboxed, I was overjoyed to say the least. I sent them my thousands of receipts and they were able to personally scan all of them. Everything from those shoeboxes was done in six weeks. It was such a relief.
I have been with Shoeboxed for about six months and in that time Shoeboxed has taken and processed six or seven thousand receipts.
SBX: Did you have any concerns about storing your information in the cloud?
KS: I work with the cloud so I knew where Shoeboxed was coming from. Security is critical in my business (and for my data) but I could see the Shoeboxed operation was very secure and that worked for me. They provided me with the solution I needed and at that point I had absolutely nothing to lose so the decision was easy.
SBX: How long might it have taken you to complete the task if not for Shoeboxed?
KS: I was already working 90 hour weeks and didn’t have any time to look at the receipts.
And the way the data is saved and downloadable – I can just plug that into my accounting system which saves me even more time – time AND money. And, after all, I’m a chartered accountant and for people like me, that’s gold.
I can’t even think how much time Shoeboxed has saved me. It has to have saved me at least 10 hours a week. Before I would have paid someone else to get all that data entered – so from a cost perspective it’s probably saved me at least $500 dollars a week.
The fact that the ATO accepts the scanned documents makes it even better. I love that I have the freedom to drop my ongoing receipts off at the Shoeboxed office – which is close to my home. I’ve even met the managing director, who has personally helped me when I’ve had questions, as have the other staff members – their customer service is just excellent which gives me an even greater confidence that I made the right decision to go with Shoeboxed.
